Health Hazards

Food to
Avoid

Not all food is fuel. Some highly processed ingredients can trigger inflammation, disrupt metabolism, and accelerate aging.

Processed Meats

Common Examples

Deli meats (bologna, turkey, ham), hot dogs, sausages, pepperoni, beef jerky, bacon

Why Limit This?

Often high in sodium and nitrates/nitrites, which are linked to heart disease and cancer risks. 'Cured' usually means nitrates are added.

Refined Grains

Common Examples

White bread, white pasta, white rice, pastries, flour tortillas, crackers, biscuits

Why Limit This?

Stripped of fiber and nutrients. They cause rapid spikes in blood sugar and insulin, promoting inflammation and weight gain.

Sugary Drinks

Common Examples

Soda, energy drinks, sweetened iced tea, fruit cocktails/juice drinks, sports drinks

Why Limit This?

The single largest source of added sugar in the modern diet. Drinking sugar bypasses the body's satiety signals, leading to metabolic issues.

Industrial Seed Oils

Common Examples

Soybean oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, canola oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil

Why Limit This?

High in Omega-6 fatty acids which can be pro-inflammatory when not balanced with Omega-3s. Often highly processed using heat and solvents.

Trans Fats (Partially Hydrogenated)

Common Examples

Fried fast foods, commercial baked goods (pie crusts, cakes), non-dairy coffee creamers, stick margarine

Why Limit This?

Artificially created fats that raise bad cholesterol (LDL) and lower good cholesterol (HDL). Linked strongly to heart disease.

High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)

Common Examples

Soda, candy, sweetened yogurt, salad dressings, frozen junk food, breads, canned fruit

Why Limit This?

A cheap sweetener that is metabolized differently than glucose, putting stress on the liver and promoting fatty liver disease.

Artificial Sweeteners

Common Examples

Aspartame, Sucralose, Saccharin (found in diet sodas, sugar-free gum, 'light' yogurt)

Why Limit This?

May disrupt gut microbiome balance and negatively impact metabolism. Some studies suggest they may increase cravings for sweet foods.

Highly Processed Snacks

Common Examples

Chips, cheese puffs, pretzels, microwave popcorn

Why Limit This?

Engineered to be 'hyper-palatable,' overriding fullness signals. Usually a combination of refined carbs, unhealthy fats, and excess sodium.
